Without further ado, let’s meet the candidates!

Naseem Ullah

PUTTING YOU BACK IN THE UNION

I want AUB to be a real community, rather than an atomised collection of students. With these policies I hope to make that happen!

Make the union for the students.

The job of the AUB SU is to represent the students; it is our university and our union. As of now the union has failed to prioritise the students over other interests. I will ensure that the interests of the AUBSU are the interests of the students.

Aiming to channels for protest and engagement which ensure the Union back and facilitate students’ endeavours. For example, last year we had protested the mas firing of techs, the union should have informed and assisted in these, instead they stayed silent.

Stop AI replacing us.

End the use of generative AI in our university and students’ union. We are a school of talented artists whose art should be used and represented in our school’s material. AI is being used to cut out artist from the arts, AUB should stand firmly against this.

How?

If material or art is needed, we should hold open submissions and competitions to allow students to be our designers – not AI. I will put on Anti-AI exhibitions that showcase the beautiful original work we are capable of. We will get the opportunity to show that AI is not needed.

Better events and stronger community

The uni has so many societies and for the most part they exist as lone units I would like to see events that bring multiple societies together.

Our Students Union’s events are a bit naff and not appealing to most students. We need more fun, exciting, and engaging events. Where are the club nights? Where are the film screenings? Arts and crafts have a place but aren’t for everyone I will put on events with more appeal.

How?

The arts bar and the canteen could be used for more late-night events. Clubs and societies have been left to do the heavy lifting and must organise independently. We should and could bring them together on campus to connect students, increase engagement, and have some real fun.

TOGETHER, LET’S MAKE EVERY VOICE AT AUB COUNT!

Hi, I’m Dishika, a third year Interior Architecture and Design Student, running for Student Executive Officer to make sure every voice at AUB is heard and valued! As an international student, I believe in celebrating our DIVERSITY and building a more INCLUSIVE, CREATIVE, and CONNECTED CAMPUS. I’ll amplify UNDERREPRESENTED VOICES, improve COMMUNICATION across AUB, and host “CULTURE CONNECT” events that bring students together through CREATIVITY and COMMUNITY. I’m passionate about WELLBEING and BELONGING as I aim to introduce a “CREATIVE BUDDIES” mentorship scheme and believe in promoting accessible spaces for CONNECTION. I’ll champion COLLABORATION across courses, support STUDENT LED CAMPAIGNS, and showcase your TALENT through the “STUDENT SPOTLIGHT” series. I believe these are the interesting initiative/events that I would love to organise for you all!

With EMPATHY, CREATIVITY and ACTION, I’ll ensure every STUDENT feels REPRESENTED and INSPIRED.

VOTE DISHIKA – together, let’s make every voice at AUB count!

I believe it is a school’s responsibility to provide students not only with an education, but the tools to correctly learn even after they leave.

The ability to understand how to correctly research topics we are passionate about is extremely important, especially considering the fact that AI and misinformation is running rampant in all the areas we are accustomed to researching into.

Our school’s library should have practices in place in order to teach students the proper way to research and check the validity of sources we want to use – from wanting to learn from school assignments to personal projects.

As a student executive officer, I want to make research classes available in the library for all to sign up, allowing us to be able to understand how to properly learn about subjects in and outside of a school setting, in a time where one of the most difficult things about research is knowing if what you’re looking at is real or not.

STUDENT-LED REFERENDUM

“Should the Students Union (and University*) be prohibited from using A.I. generated materials (art, images, and media made or led by A.I.)? “

*The University has its own policy making process and whilst this result will feed into their process, it will not dictate their next steps. The result will inform our position as your Students’ Union.

'YES' CAMPAIGN

AUB is an arts university with hundreds of creative graphic designers and illustrators.

The use of AI generated materials including art, images, and media made or led by AI does not belong within our Students’ Union, and we want to constitute a new policy in order to ban this.

As campaign agents, we are using our voices to bring attention to this issue to facilitate a change in how content and materials are created within the SU, following the original petition which triggered this referendum with over 500 signatures.

We believe that as an arts university, the creativity and originality of students and graduates should come at the forefront. AI is a known threat to the jobs and futures of creatives, that steals not only opportunities, but original artwork from human artists.

We want to ensure that this policy is implemented to establish clear boundaries around AI and its usage, and to ensure that the SU will prioritise the students’ best interests.

We will be campaigning on campus for this cause all week, and there will be an email to vote YES or NO in the referendum in your AUB inbox.

Please keep an eye out and vote YES to prohibit the Students’ Union from using AI generated materials. Thank you!

'NO' CAMPAIGN

There is no student Campaign for the ‘No’ choice.

You may still select ‘No’ when you cast your vote in the referendum, this is a vote against implementing a policy on A.I.-generated materials (art, images, and media made or led by A.I.) within the Students’ Union.
