Terms & Conditions of Membership

1. Membership Categories

Full Membership

  • Every enrolled student at Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) is automatically a full member of AUBSU unless they choose to opt out, in accordance with the Education Act 1994.

  • Full members have full rights under these Terms.

Associate Membership

  • Associate membership may be granted to non-students, alumni, or members of the local community at the discretion of the Trustee Board.

  • An annual fee for Associate Membership will be set by the Trustee Board.

  • Associate members may:

    • Access SU services, societies, and activities (subject to fees and capacity).

    • Attend SU events.

    • Support societies in agreement with elected officers and staff.

  • Associate members may not:

    • Vote in SU elections or referenda.

    • Stand as candidates in elections.

    • Run or establish societies.

    • Hold society committee or SU officer positions.


2. Rights of Full Members

Full members are entitled to:

  • Vote in all AUBSU elections and referenda.

  • Stand for elected positions, subject to eligibility rules in the By-Laws.

  • Join, create, and lead societies and student groups.

  • Access representation, advice, and welfare services.

  • Attend, speak, and vote at Student Assembly and General Meetings.


3. Communities

  • In addition to societies, AUBSU supports Communities – networks that bring students together around shared experiences, identities, or interests.

  • Communities are open and inclusive spaces, and membership may be automatic (e.g. for liberation groups) or opt-in.

  • Communities are supported by AUBSU staff and officers to ensure they remain safe, representative, and student-led.

  • Participation in Communities does not require additional membership fees, though events or activities may have associated costs.


4. Responsibilities of Members

By being a member of AUBSU (full or associate), you agree to:

  • Abide by AUBSU’s Constitution, By-Laws, Membership Code of Conduct, and policies.

  • Treat others with respect and uphold AUBSU’s values of inclusivity and fairness.

  • Act responsibly when using SU services, attending events, or representing AUBSU.

  • Respect the democratic and collective decisions of AUBSU.


5. Societies & Activities

  • Societies may charge an additional membership fee.

  • Society membership lasts for one academic year unless otherwise stated.

  • All society members must follow their society constitution and AUBSU policies.

  • Society leaders must be full members; associate members may support activities with officer/staff approval but cannot lead.


6. Events & Tickets

  • Event tickets are non-refundable unless the event is cancelled.

  • Some events are run through third-party platforms (e.g. Native.fm) – their terms also apply.

  • AUBSU reserves the right to refuse entry or remove individuals where behaviour breaches the Code of Conduct.


7. Complaints

  • Members have the right to raise concerns through the Complaints Policy.

  • Election appeals follow the separate rules outlined in the Elections By-Law.


8. Disciplinary Action

  • Breaches of the Constitution, By-Laws, or Code of Conduct may result in sanctions including warnings, suspension of SU rights, or referral to AUB or external authorities.


9. Limitation of Liability

AUBSU will not be liable for loss, damage, or injury except where required by law.


10. Changes to Terms

These Terms will be updated as required to reflect changes to AUBSU’s Constitution, By-Laws, or the law. Members will be notified via the website.
