We’re aware that some students have raised concerns about the use of AI tools in parts of our Freshers branding, particularly the “monster” illustrations.
The artwork was developed by the SU President, an AUB Visual Communication graduate, who was transparent from the outset about using AI as part of the process. This approach was discussed and approved by the Students’ Union before the project began and forms part of an ongoing professional exploration into how design, illustration, and technology intersect.
At AUBSU, we recognise that AI is part of the creative industry, not as a replacement for artists, but as a tool that requires skill, judgement, and critical understanding. Our Freshers branding reflected this: every element was reworked, refined, and composed by hand, representing how creative tools continue to evolve.
We understand that not everyone will feel the same about AI in art, and that’s okay. These are complex and evolving questions across the arts and wider industry that deserve open, informed and critical discussion.
That’s why our first Student Assembly in November will host a focused discussion on AI and Creativity in the Arts as an open, student-led conversation to shape how AUBSU approaches creative technology in the future. Alongside this, we’ll be running six open sessions throughout November, bringing together students and staff to explore authorship, originality, upskilling, sustainability, and the future of creative work.
Insights from these discussions will inform a formal report on AI as a Creative Tool or Threat, to be shared publicly later this year. This report will contribute to the ongoing review of AUB’s AI policy, ensuring transparency around its use in both academic and staff contexts.
Your Sabbatical Officers are here to listen, learn, and lead these conversations, ensuring AUB students don’t just follow the AI shift, but help shape it.
